5月5日は、五節句の一つ「端午(たんご)の節句」です。
May 5th is Tango no Sekku =Boy’s festival, one of the five seasonal festivals.
中国の行事と日本の風習が一緒になり、また、江戸時代にこの日を「尚武(しょうぶ)の節句」と定めたことなどから、現代にも受け継がれる「端午の節句」へと形を変えてきました。
Because Chinese events and Japanese customs came together, and because this day was designated as “Shobu no Sekku” during the Edo period, it changed its form to “Boys’ Festival,” which has been passed down to the present day.
中国
山野で薬草を摘み、菖蒲酒を飲んで邪気を払う
China
Pick medicinal herbs in the mountains and drink iris wine to ward off evil spirits.
日本
田植えをする早乙女が身を清め、田の神さまを迎え祀る（日本では、女性が行う風習だったのですね）
Japan
Saotome, who is planting rice, purifies herself and worships the god of rice fields. (In Japan, it was a custom performed by women.)
飛鳥時代に伝わったとされる中国の行事が、宮中から庶民へと広がり、菖蒲湯に入る習慣が広く知られるようになったと言われています。
It is said that this Chinese event, which have been introduced during the Asuka period, spread from the imperial court to the common people, and the custom of taking iris bath became widely known.
江戸時代/Edo Period
菖蒲(しょうぶ)が、武道や武芸を重んじる「尚武(しょうぶ)」に通じることから「尚武の節句」へ
The name “Shobu no Sekku” comes from the fact that iris is associated with “Shobu”, which values martial arts and martial arts.
こいのぼり/Carp streamers
現代では、五月晴れの青空を背景に薫風を受けて泳ぐ「こいのぼり」ですが、旧暦5月５日は今の暦でみると梅雨の時期（2024年は6月10日）雨の中を泳ぐ鯉を、登竜門：（困難を突破して）立身出世ができると見立てているそうです。
