冬の寒さが厳しくなる時期は、多くの植物は春を迎える準備のため力を蓄える頃。落葉樹は葉を落とし、球根や種は土の中で芽を出すのに良い気候まで、じっと息を潜めているかのようです。

そんな冬に咲く“金盞花(きんせんか)”とは、水仙(すいせん)のこと。寒さにも強く、春を告げると言われる花…ですが、さすがに今の時期は咲いていません。

During the cold winter months, many plants gather their strength in preparation for the arrival of spring. Deciduous trees drop their leaves, and bulbs and seeds seem to be holding their breath until the weather is favorable for them to sprout in the soil.

The “kinsenka” flowers that bloom in winter are daffodils.It is a flower that is resistant to cold and is said to herald the arrival of spring…but as expected, it is not blooming at this time of year.

一般的に金盞花(きんせんか)と呼ばれているのは、春から夏に咲く黄色や橙色の菊のような花。花のいろと形から金盞（＝金の盃）花と名付けられたそうです。

では、どうして水仙が金盞花(きんせんか)と暦に読まれているかというと、花の中央の部分を金盞（＝金の盃）に見立てたからだとか。現代人には悩ましい花の呼び名ですね。

Generally called “Kinsenka”, it is a yellow or orange chrysanthemum-like flower that blooms from spring to summer. It is said that it was named kin-no-ka (golden cup) flower because of the color and shape of the flower.

So, the reason why daffodils are read as Kinsenka in Japanese old calendars is because the center part of the flower is likened to a Kinsen (golden cup). This is a name for a flower that is troublesome to modern people.

地域にもよりますが、新しい年を迎えるころ、寒さの中に春の兆しを届けてくれる水仙たち。甘い香りだけでなく、可憐さと凛々しさを併せ持つ姿を目にするのが楽しみです。

Depending on the region, daffodils bring signs of spring to the cold weather as the new year approaches. I’m looking forward to seeing not only the sweet scent, but also the cute and dignified appearance.

金盞花（カレンデュラ）とマリーゴールド/Calendula and Marigold

パッと見、よく似ている2種類の花。

金盞花（カレンデュラ）は、アロマオイルにもあるように薬効のある植物です。

利尿，発汗，瀉下，止血，胆汁分泌促進，通経，芳香性健胃作用がある．結膜炎に目薬として用いる．
観賞用として広く栽培される．かつて花は黄色の着色料としてチーズやバター，米料理やスープの色付けに利用された．高価なサフランに対して「貧乏人のサフラン」とよばれた．

マリーゴールドは、観賞用の花。

語源は、Mary’s gold（聖母マリアの黄金の花）だと言われています。

At first glance, two types of flowers look very similar.

Calendula is a plant with medicinal properties, as its aroma oil also shows.

『It has diuretic, sweating, cataracting, hemostasis, bile secretion stimulation, menorrhagic effects, and aromatic stomachic effects. Used as eye drops for conjunctivitis. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental. In the past, the flowers were used as a yellow coloring agent to color cheese, butter, rice dishes, and soups. It was called the “poor man’s saffron” in contrast to the more expensive saffron. 』

Marigolds are ornamental flowers.

The origin of the word is said to be Mary’s gold (the golden flower of the Virgin Mary).
