冬の始まりです。
The calendar finally marks the beginning of winter
It’s the beginning of winter.
11月に入っても夏日を観測する気候では、立冬といってもピンとこないかもしれませんね。
In a climate where we can observe summer days even into November, calling it the beginning of winter may not make sense.
七十二候(しちじゅうにこう/72 pentads)は、山茶始開(つばきはじめてひらく)へ。
この時の山茶は、つばきと読むものの「山茶花(さざんか)」のこと。
The 72 pentads went to Tsubaki Hajime Hiraku.
The sancha at this time refers to “Sazanka/Sasanqua,’’ which is pronounced as tsubaki(camellia).
山茶(さんさ/さんざ)は、椿(つばき)の漢名＝中国での呼び名
Sansa is the Chinese name for camellia.

山茶花(さざんか)の花。
Sazanka/Sasanqua flowers.
山茶花(さざんか)と椿(つばき)はよく似ているので、花の時期や散る様子でなんとなく区別している気がします。（どちらも同じツバキ科ツバキ属）
Sazanka and camellias look very similar, so I feel like they can be differentiated by the time of flowering and the way they fall. (Both belong to the same family, Camellia genus)
山茶花と椿の見分け方/How to tell the difference between sasanqua and camellia
花の時期（地域差があります）/Flowering period (there are regional differences)
山茶花：10月～12月くらい
椿：12月～4月くらい
Sazanka/Sasanqua: October to December
Camellia: December to April
花が散る様子/How the flowers fall
山茶花：花びらがバラバラに散る
椿：花首から落ちる（花の形を保つ）
Sazanka/Sasanqua: petals fall apart
Camellia: Falling from the flower neck (keeps the flower shape)

山茶花：（椿に比して）小ぶり・葉の付け根に毛がある
椿：葉が大きい
Sazanka/Sasanqua: Small (compared to camellia), with hairs at the base of the leaves
Camellia: large leaves

山茶花：艶なし
椿：艶がある
Sazanka/Sasanqua: No luster
Camellia: Shiny
という違いもあるようです。
There seems to be such a difference.
